Modifying Herbs

Artichoke Leaf: Artichoke Leaf has been used for centuries as a diuretic and an herb that strengthens liver function by increasing bile production. Because of its bitter taste and medicinal effect, many cultures use artichoke as a flavoring agent in liquors designed to be consumed before meals to stimulate the production of digestive juices.

Artichoke has a taste of BITTER, SALTY and temperature of COOL.

Artichoke Leaf is a proven digestive aid that can protect the liver, relieve digestive problems and support healthy cholesterol balance. It may also be useful for weight reduction because it decreases the fat content of the blood and increases digestive efficiency.

Studies have demonstrated Artichoke's ability to protect the liver and possibly even to help liver cells regenerate. Artichoke is particularly helpful in relieving gastrointestinal problems that result from an inability to adequately process fats, a result of poor bile secretion. A 2001 study indicated that Artichoke may also ultimately prove an effective treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Because secreting Bile helps the liver regulate the production of Cholesterol, Artichoke can be an effective cholesterol regulator. As a result, some pharmaceutical manufacturers are adding the Artichoke constituent Cynarin to their cholesterol lowering drugs.

There are no notable cautions or known drug or nutrient interactions.

Digestive Enzymes Bromelain, Papain and Lactase: Many nutritionally oriented practitioners prescribe digestive enzymes to otherwise healthy patients in order to promote good digestion and optimize nutrient absorption.

Specifically, digestive enzymes can help treat Heartburn, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other digestive complaints. Enzymes are also often prescribed to soothe side effects from harsh chemotherapy and radiation regimens. Anecdotal evidence and a handful of small studies indicate that taking a small amount of digestive enzyme supplements can also improve the chronic skin complaints associated with Rosacea.

Studies involving the digestive enzyme Bromelain, in particular, have found it an effective anti-inflammatory and useful in treating the pain and swelling associated with the following conditions: gout, bronchitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, scrapes and insect bites.

These digestive enzymes are natural blood thinners, so use caution when combining with anticoagulants like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Warfarin and others. Patients taking prescription anti-inflammatory medication should check with their doctor before taking. Digestive enzymes should also be avoided by patients with active gastric or duodenal ulcers. Patients with diabetes should consult their doctors before taking digestive enzyme supplements, since they can alter levels of nutrients and sugars obtained from foods. Pregnant or breast-feeding women should consult their health-care practitioner before taking.

Gentian Root: Because of its bitter taste, Gentian Root has been used historically as a digestive aid and appetite stimulant.

Gentian Root has a taste of BITTER and a Temperature of COLD.

Gentian's active constituent compounds gentiopicrin and amarogentin stimulate the secretion of saliva and Hydrochloric Acid in the stomach. Gentiopicrin may also have some hepatic protective properties.

Specifically, the herb is used to treat poor appetite, weak digestion, anemia, anorexia, nausea and poor circulation. It is also used as an anti-addiction herb, e.g., as an aid in smoking cessation. Recent studies show that Gentian has immune-activating properties, and is commonly given to people who are recovering from long-term illness to improve assimilation of nutrients and increase immune function.

Gentian Root should be avoided by patients with hyperacidity, stomach ulcers, and when gastric irritation and inflammation occur. There are no known herb drug interactions.
