Modifying Herbs

Rhodiola: Medicinal uses of this plant date back to ancient Greece, however its principal historic uses were in Scandinavia and Russia, where it has long been used to combat fatigue and restore energy.

Rhodiola has a taste of SOUR, MUCILAGENOUS, and slightly BITTER, and a temperature of COOL.

Rhodiola is a well documented adaptogen-endurance enhancer. Current research indicates that Rhodiola works by influencing key central nervous system neurotransmitters called monoamines (dopamine and serotonin are examples). An imbalance of monoamines is believed to be the cause of several hard-to-treat illness, such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and seasonal affective disorder.

Specifically, Rhodiola is used to, improve performance capacity under stress, ease chronic fatigue syndrome, fight fatigue, boost energy, prevent stress related illness, and improve endurance.

There are no notable cautions or known drug or herb interactions for Rhodiola..

California Poppy: Native Americans used California Poppy for its sedative and pain-relieving properties. It is commonly prescribed in Europe as a relaxant and anti-spasmodic.

California Poppy has a taste of BITTER, ACRID and a temperature of COOL.

Although California Poppy is closely related to the opium poppy, it has a markedly different effect on the nervous system. It is not a narcotic. Rather, it tends to normalize psychological function.

The plant possesses analgesic, antispasmodic, nervine and sedative properties. It contains alkaloids (including propotine, cryptopine and chelidonine) and flavone glycosides.

California Poppy is used primarily as a remedy for anxiety, sleeplessness, spasms of smooth muscle like the uterus, intestine, bronchial airwaves, and pain relief. It is cooling and can be given to people with nervousness who have excess heat caused by adrenal weakness.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take California Poppy without consulting their health-care provider. There are no known drug or herb interactions, but caution is advised (seek the advice of your herbalist or other knowledgeable health-care practitioner) when taken with benzodiazepines or other sedative drugs.

Reishi: Traditional Asian healers have used Reishi mushrooms to strengthen the immune system and promote longevity for thousands of years. In China it is known as the "mushroom of immortality".

Reishi has a taste of SWEET, MILD and a temperature of WARM.

Reishi, and other medicinal mushrooms contain polysaccharides, large, complex molecules that are proven immunomolulators. Many current studies are exploring whether the immunomodulatory effects of medicinal mushrooms will prove effective in preventing heart disease, reducing the risk of dangerous blood clots, fighting cancer cells and increasing the potency of cancer treatments.

Reishi is a particularly useful clinical herb for helping to reduce fatigue, "calm the spirit", promote restful sleep, and reduce anxiety and nervousness in people who have deficiency, or adrenal weakness. Reishi extracts have a long history of use for respiratory problems and some preliminary modern clinical trials from China are encouraging. Reishi is recommended for chronic allergic rhinitis, respiratory allergies in general, asthma, and bronchitis.

There are no notable cautions or known herb drug interactions for Reishi mushrooms.
