Modifying Herbs
Goldenseal:
Native Americans used Goldenseal to treat infections,
especially of the eyes, as well as digestive upset
and skin ailments.
Goldenseal has a taste of BITTER and a temperature
of COLD.
Today Goldenseal is widely valued as a flu remedy
as well as a treatment for sinus infections, bronchitis
and other hot infections of the respiratory, urinary
and digestive tracts. It is effective because
of its ability to soothe inflamed or infected
mucous membranes. It is also useful for diarrhea
and chronic excess mucus in the bowels, with attendant
loss of efficiency in absorbing nutrients and
eliminating wastes. It is indicated for bacterial
or amoebic infections of the digestive tract,
such as giardia and dysentery. Goldenseal may
also be used topically to treat skin inflammation,
treat eye infections like conjunctivitis, heal
minor cuts and scrapes, ease diarrhea and fight
warts, cold sores and canker sores.
Research on Goldenseal itself is scanty, but
a tremendous amount of work has been done on its
best-known active constituent, berberine. Other
berberine-containing plants include huang lian
(Coptis chinensis), barberry (Berberis vulgaris),
and a number of other plants. Berberine has proven
antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating
effects. It also shows inhibitory effects against
human breast cancer cells.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women as well as
patients with severe kidney or liver disease should
avoid Goldenseal.

Oregano Leaf and Oregano Oil:
Recently, the distilled oil of wild oregano has
been touted as a treatment for infections, cancer,
Candida and other diseases due to its antiseptic
and immune-activating qualities.
Oregano Leaf has a taste of AROMATIC, BITTER
and a temperature of COOL. Oregano Oil has a taste
of AROMATIC and a temperature of WARM.
Oregano Oil contains thymol and carvacrol, compounds
that inhibit the growth of fungi, worms, and a
number of miroorganisms. Some sources recommend
rubbing a drop or two of Oregano Oil into an area
that is itching due to athlete's foot, a common
condition caused by the Tinea versicolor fungus.
Thymol and carvacrol are likely also responsible
for the mild stomach-settling and cough-clearing
qualities often attributed to Oregano Oil.
Disease-fighting antioxidants have been identified
in Oregano, though it is not clear whether they
appear in the oil as well as the leaves and other
above-ground parts of the plant.
Specifically, Oregano Oil can be used to alleviate
toothaches and fight Candida overgrowth syndrome,
a condition believed to be caused by an imbalance
in the body's fungi and bacteria levels.
Like all essential oils or volatile essences
from aromatic plants, Oregano Oil is highly concentrated.
Do not use more than a drop or two internally
for one dose.
There are no notable cautions or known herb drug
interactions for Oregano Leaf or Oregano Oil.
