Formula Philosophy by Christopher
Hobbs, L.Ac., A.H.G.
To enhance this traditional formulation
Christopher Hobbs, Secara's Chief Herbalist,
has added scientifically tested Saw Palmetto standardized
extract. Clinical trials have shown this phyto-medicine
to reduce symptoms associated with benign prostate
hyperplasia and to increase urine flow. Cordyceps
Mushroom extract was added to increase sex drive
and promote energy, and for its kidney-supporting
and anti-cancer effects. Organic Cinnamon Bark
and Cinnamon Oleo Resin were substituted for the
traditional Sichuan Aconite Root (Fu Zi), which
is toxic.
Organic Content
18% of the herbs used in this product were organically
grown.

Modifying Herbs
Saw Palmetto: An herb native
to Florida, Saw Palmetto was traditionally used
by men and women to treat problems with the genitourinary
tract and reduce symptoms such as frequent urination.
Saw Palmetto has long been used by European health
practitioners to treat prostate conditions.
Saw Palmetto has a taste of PUNGENT, SWEET and
a temperature of WARM.
Saw Palmetto is known to relieve the major symptoms
of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a benign
enlargement of the prostate gland. Though why
this is true is a matter of debate, research points
to an anti-inflammatory action and an ability
to inhibit the hormones that cause prostate cells
to multiply. Antiandrogenic (anti-male sex hormone)
actions have also been implicated.
Numerous studies have shown that Saw Palmetto
reduces the number of times a sufferer of BPH
feels the urge to urinate, increases urine flow
and minimizes the sensation that the bladder has
not emptied. Painful urination may lessen as well.
A recent analysis of several small clinical trials
of Saw Palmetto published in The Journal of the
American Medical Association found that men given
Saw Palmetto were twice as likely to report a
lessening of symptoms as those given a placebo.
Compared with a placebo, the herb improved urinary
tract symptoms by about 25%.
Recent findings also show Saw Palmetto works
faster and causes fewer cases of impotence and
reduced libido than the conventional prostate
drug, finasteride (Proscar). By affecting levels
of cancer-promoting hormones it may even play
a role in protecting against prostate cancer,
although this requires further research. Additionally,
test tube studies indicate that the herb boosts
the immune system's ability to kill bacteria,
suggesting a potential treatment for prostate
or urinary tract infections.
Saw Palmetto is also recommended as a general
tonic and remedy for persistent cough and digestive
problems.
Side effects of Saw Palmetto are relatively uncommon;
those that have been reported include mild abdominal
pain, nausea, dizziness and headache.

Cordyceps: Cordyceps Mushroom
has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands
of years as a tonic that helps the body build
strength, improves organic functioning, strengthens
the immune system and brings longevity.
Cordyceps has a taste of SWEET, BITTER and SALTY
and a temperature of WARM.
Cordyceps can help treat sexual problems; recent
studies performed at Beijing Medical University
of China and in Japan have shown a 64% success
rate among men suffering from impotence versus
24% in the placebo group.
In a number of Chinese clinical studies, primarily
in elderly patients with fatigue, Cordyceps-treated
patients reported significant improvements in
level of fatigue, ability to tolerate cold temperatures,
memory and cognitive capacity and sex drive. Patients
with respiratory diseases also reported feeling
physically stronger. Overall, Cordyceps was 80-90%
effective in alleviating fatigue in elderly subjects.
The mushroom extract has also induced sex steroid-like
effects in mice, which may account for the increased
libido reported by elderly subjects in several
studies. Cordyceps is also recommended for its
kidney-protecting effects, especially for people
taking potentially nephrotoxic drugs.
A small study presented at the American College
of Sports Medicine annual meeting in 1999 showed
that a Cordyceps-based supplement significantly
increases maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic
threshold, which may lead to improved exercise
capacity and resistance to fatigue.
Pregnant or lactating women should consult their
health care professional before using Cordyceps.
There are no known herb drug interactions for
American Ginseng.
