Modifying Herbs
Dandelion Leaf: The first mention
of the Dandelion as a medicine is in the works
of Arabian physicians of the tenth and eleventh
centuries.
Dandelion Leaf has a taste of BITTER, SWEET and
a temperature of COOL.
In Europe, Dandelion is grown commercially and
is prized for its medicinal properties. For centuries,
Dandelion Root has been regarded as an effective,
gentle laxative. The roots and leaves are often
used to treat liver conditions such as jaundice
and hepatitis and to encourage normal digestion.
The flower also contains beneficial compounds.
All parts of the plant have high concentrations
of vitamin A, as well as choline, a B vitamin
that stimulates the liver. Dandelion is commonly
recommended by herbalists as a treatment for cancer
and other conditions.
Dandelion Leaf has many of the same uses as Dandelion
Root. The main use of the leaf has been as a diuretic
for fluid build-up and edema; it can also be an
aid in high blood pressure where a mild diuretic
is called for. Dandelion Leaf is high in potassium,
which most diuretics leach from the body.
No serious side effects have been associated
with the use of Dandelion Leaf. However, if taken
in very large quantities, it may cause a skin
rash, diarrhea, heartburn or stomach discomfort.
Stop using the herb if these reactions occur,
and mention the problem to your health care professional.
Don't take Dandelion Leaf if your doctor has
advised you that you have a gallbladder problem,
a blockage or inflammation of the bile duct, or
an obstruction of the bowel. Don't use Dandelion
Leaf during an acute gallstone attack; this requires
professional medical treatment.
Because of Dandelion's diuretic effect, women
who are pregnant or breast-feeding may want to
avoid it.
There are no known herb drug interactions for
Dandelion Leaf.
