Modifying Herbs

Black Cohosh Root: Generations of Native American women and European immigrants utilized Black Cohosh to relieve the various symptoms associated with PMS, menstrual cramps and menopause. It was a favorite remedy of early American physicians.

Black Cohosh has a taste of SWEET, ACRID, BITTER and a temperature of COOL.

Black Cohosh contains phytoestrogens that help stabilize hormone levels. Black Cohosh essentially may mimic some of the effect of Hormone Replacement Therapy, without stimulating the growth of breast tumors according to some preliminary research. Black Cohosh also has antispasmodic properties that lesson menstrual discomforts. In one study, Black Cohosh extract completely relieved symptoms of hot flashes in women with breast cancer who were taking tamoxifen.

Because of its hormonal effects, Black Cohosh should not be used by women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or have an estrogen sensitive cancer, though some new studies did not show a cell-proliferant effect in estrogen-dependent human cells. In high doses, Black Cohosh can cause such symptoms as dizziness, nausea, and headache in sensitive individuals. It's best to start with a low dose and work up to a full dose after several days.

Chastetree Fruit (Vitex): Since the time of the ancient Greeks, Chastetree Fruit has been used to treat menstrual complaints. It was actually prescribed by Hippocrates in 450 B.C.

Chastetree Fruit has a taste of ACRID, BITTER and a temperature of WARM.

Although the herb contains no hormones, it influences hormonal activity by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce more luteinizing hormone. This, in turn, causes the ovaries to produce more of the hormone progesterone. Prolactin levels are often reduced - an excess of which has been associated with symptoms of PMS.

Specifically, Chastetree Fruit may reduce symptoms of PMS, minimize fibrocystic breast symptoms, regulate ovulation, promote fertility, increase supply of mother's milk in nursing women, relieve menopausal symptoms, relieve the pain of endometriosis, and control menstrual related acne. It can also be used to treat male teenage acne.

Because of its effect on hormones and the uterus, patients should not take Chastetree Fruit during pregnancy. If patient is taking Chastetree Fruit for infertility, the patient should stop use immediately after first missed period. Chastetree Fruit should be avoided by women taking oral contraceptives, because the herb might theoretically reduce their effectiveness.
