To enhance this formula's action
for calming the Liver and reducing pathogenic
heat, dizziness, tremor and headache, and to enhance
mineral content, Christopher Hobbs, Secara's
Chief Herbalist, has added organic Nettle Leaf
and organic Horsetail standardized extract. Due
to abalone's endangered status, magnesium
and calcium were substituted for the traditional
Abalone Shell (Shi Jue Ming).

Modifying Herbs
Nettle Leaf: Nettle has been
used for hundreds of years to treat rheumatism,
eczema, arthritis, gout and anemia. Its use as
a treatment for prostate problems is relatively
recent.
Nettle has a taste of SALTY, BITTER and a temperature
of COOL.
Nettle, known to be rich in chlorophyll and minerals,
is used for anemia and weak blood and has shown
anti-allergic properties in hay fever. In tea
form it is taken for urinary problems such as
cystitis and gravel. Nettle increases the excretion
of uric acid and is used internally or externally
for arthritis and rheumatism. Nettle Leaf is slightly
diuretic, as well as cleansing and hemostatic.
The rhizomes are often blended with saw palmetto
to alleviate inflammation and swelling of the
prostate gland. Nettle Leaf is extremely nutritious,
containing large amounts of vitamins, minerals,
chlorophyll and a complete protein. The greens
can be used to help build the blood in cases of
blood deficiency with fatigue and are useful during
pregnancy. After steaming, the stinging properties
are completely destroyed.
Some studies are beginning to confirm that certain
traditional uses of Nettle have scientific validity,
particularly in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia
and osteoarthritis and used in conjunction with
anti-inflammatory medications for BPH. Recent
laboratory studies are offering plausible explanations
for why Nettle might help rheumatoid arthritis.
There are no notable cautions or known herb drug
interactions for Nettle Leaf.

Extracts from fruits of saw palmetto (Sabal serrulata)
and roots of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica):
viable alternatives in the medical treatment of
benign prostatic hyperplasia and associated lower
urinary tracts symptoms.
Horsetail Shoots: Since it was
first recommended by the Roman physician Galen,
several cultures have employed Horsetail as a
remedy for kidney and bladder troubles, arthritis,
bleeding ulcers, and tuberculosis.
Horsetail has a taste of SWEET, BITTER and a
temperature of NEUTRAL.
Horsetail, also known as shavegrass, is valuable
for its high silica content, which makes it useful
for strengthening and regenerating connective
tissues.
Horsetail is recommended for strengthening the
hair and nails and for speeding the healing of
bones. It is also beneficial
for urinary tract infections. Although it is considered
a mild diuretic, Horsetail is used for incontinence
and bedwetting in children because of its astringency.
Horsetail helps reduce inflammation or benign
enlargement of the prostate. It is commonly used
in Chinese medicine to reduce irritation and redness
of the eyes. Externally, Horsetail poultices are
applied for bleeding wounds, rheumatism, fractures
and sprains.
Horsetail is contraindicated in cardiac or kidney
dysfunction. Consumption of fresh Horsetail is
reported to lead to thiamine deficiency. Horsetail
extract is safe to use because the thiaminase
is broken down.
The diuretic effects of Horsetail may enhance
the toxic effects of digoxin, a medication used
to treat irregular heart rhythms and congestive
heart failure. For this reason, people taking
digoxin should not take Horsetail without first
consulting a healthcare provider.
