Formula Philosophy by Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac., A.H.G.
To enhance this formula, Christopher Hobbs, Secara's Chief Herbalist, has added the widely prescribed ancient herb Hawthorn Leaf & Flower to promote a healthy heart and a calm nervous system; California Poppy, a primary western phyto-medicine for reducing anxiety, and for promoting calmness and good sleep; and Juniper Berry extract, which was substituted for the traditional Chinese sedative Biota Seed (Bai Zi Ren), to ensure quality. Imported Biota Seed is often rancid in trade, rendering it potentially toxic.

Modifying Herbs
Hawthorn: Both ancient Greeks and Native Americans recognized the heart healthy properties of Hawthorn.
Hawthorn leaves and flowers have a taste of SOUR, slightly BITTER, and SWEET and a temperature of WARMING.
Hawthorn is a potent anti-oxidant. It opens up blood vessels that feed the heart, acting as a nutritive tonic and enhancing its pumping power and strengthening its function.
Hawthorn has a long history as the herb of choice for strengthening, tonifying, and protecting the cardiovascular system. It is useful for treating palpitations, angina, atherosclerosis, early stage congestive heart failure, and hypertension.
Hawthorn may potentiate the effects of digitalis though a recent study disputes this. Patients who take prescription heart or blood pressure medications should consult their health-care provider before taking this herb.

California Poppy: Native Americans used California Poppy for its sedative and pain-relieving properties. It is commonly prescribed in Europe as a relaxant and anti-spasmodic.
California Poppy has a taste of BITTER, ACRID and a temperature of COOL.
Although California Poppy is closely related to the opium poppy, it has a markedly different effect on the nervous system. It is not a narcotic. Rather, it tends to normalize psychological function.
The plant possesses analgesic, antispasmodic, nervine and sedative properties. It contains alkaloids (including propotine, cryptopine and chelidonine) and flavone glycosides.
California Poppy is used primarily as a remedy for anxiety, sleeplessness, spasms of smooth muscle like the uterus, intestine, bronchial airwaves, and pain relief. It is cooling and can be given to people with nervousness who have excess heat caused by adrenal weakness.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take California Poppy without consulting their health-care provider. There are no known drug or herb interactions, but caution is advised (seek the advice of your herbalist or other knowledgeable health-care practitioner) when taken with benzodiazepines or other sedative drugs.
Juniper Berry: Historically Juniper has been a flavoring agent, an aromatic used in gin, soaps and perfumes.
Juniper has a taste of PUNGENT, AROMATIC and a temperature of WARM.
Juniper has been used traditionally to treat gastritis, flatulence, rheumatism, cystitis and intestinal worms.
Juniper Berries contain diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties which make this herb useful for chronic cystitis, nephritis, arthritis, rheumatism, gout, and for flatulent colic. The bitterness of Juniper Berry makes it a good digestive aid, and treatment for indigestion.
Because, prolonged use of Juniper Berry can stress kidneys, Juniper Berry should not be used longer than six weeks in succession. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid Juniper Berry.
