Modifying Herbs
Cinchona Bark: Legend has it
that the name cinchona came from the countess
of Chinchon, the wife of a Peruvian viceroy, who
was cured of a malarial type of fever by using
the bark of the cinchona tree in 1638.
Cinchona has a taste of BITTER and a temperature
of COOL.
Cinchona Bark, or quinine bark, is one of the
rainforest's most famous plants and most important
discoveries. The indigenous people of Peru have
taken Cinchona Bark for many centuries and it
is still a well-used remedy for fevers, digestive
problems and infections. As a bitter tonic, Cinchona
Bark stimulates saliva, digestive secretions and
the appetite, and improves weak digestive function.
Cinchona is also used to treat cramps, especially
night cramps, and can help relieve arthritis.
In India, Cinchona is used to treat sciatica and
dysentery as well as problems associated with
kapha.
Quinine bark contains naturally-occurring quinine
alkaloids. These quinine alkaloids are sold as
prescription drugs with numerous side effects
and warnings documented in the literature, but
the whole plant extract is many times safer than
the purified alkaloids. Be sure, however, that
your health-care practitioner is familiar with
the warnings, side effects and contraindications
of higher therapeutic levels of quinine alkaloids.
Cinchona Bark may potentiate blood-thinning medications
such as warfarin.
