Modifying Herbs
Elder Fruit: In addition to being the source for Elderberry wine and jelly, Elder Fruit and Flowers, have been used medicinally for centuries to fight off respiratory infections and other ailments.
Elder Fruit has the taste of ACRID, BITTER, SWEET and a temperature of COOL.
Elder Fruit contain flavonoids, which affect the body in a variety of ways. As antihistamines, flavonoids can be useful in the treatment of allergies. As antioxidants, they help counteract the cell destruction caused by free radicals. And, as antivirals, they aid the body in fighting off infection.
Elder Fruit's ability to promote urination has made it a traditional remedy for fever, colds and flu. In addition, Elder Fruit can be used to treat chronic rheumatism, neuralgia, sciatica. Elder is an effective detoxifier and can be used topically to clear infections such as acne, boils, and skin rashes.
There are no notable cautions or known herb or drug interactions for Elder Fruit.

Inhibition of several strains of influenza virus in vitro and reduction of symptoms by an elderberry extract (Sambucus nigra L.) during an outbreak of influenza B Panama.
Thyme and Thyme Oil: Historically, Thyme has been prized as both a healing and a culinary herb.
Thyme has a taste of BITTER, AROMATIC and a temperature of WARM.
Its active constituent thymol gives Thyme its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It is often used in mouthwashes, liniments and lozenges.
Thyme has a beneficial expectorant and antispasmodic effect on the bronchi and is taken for whooping cough, bronchitis and coughs. It is commonly used in cough syrups. Because of its antiseptic effect, Thyme can be used for sore throats. Thyme is widely prescribed by MD's in Europe as a remedy for colds and flu.
Thyme is often avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women, though it is not contraindicated during pregnancy by the Botanical Safety Handbook.
Goldenseal: Native
Americans used Goldenseal to treat infections,
especially of the eyes, as well as digestive upset
and skin ailments.
Goldenseal has a taste of BITTER and a temperature
of COLD.
Today Goldenseal is widely valued as a flu remedy
as well as a treatment for sinus infections, bronchitis
and other hot infections of the respiratory, urinary
and digestive tracts. It is effective because
of its ability to soothe inflamed or infected
mucous membranes. It is also useful for diarrhea
and chronic excess mucus in the bowels, with attendant
loss of efficiency in absorbing nutrients and
eliminating wastes. It is indicated for bacterial
or amoebic infections of the digestive tract,
such as giardia and dysentery. Goldenseal may
also be used topically to treat skin inflammation,
treat eye infections like conjunctivitis, heal
minor cuts and scrapes, ease diarrhea and fight
warts, cold sores and canker sores.
Research on Goldenseal itself is scanty, but
a tremendous amount of work has been done on its
best-known active constituent, berberine. Other
berberine-containing plants include huang lian
(Coptis chinensis), barberry (Berberis vulgaris),
and a number of other plants. Berberine has proven
antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating
effects. It also shows inhibitory effects against
human breast cancer cells.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women as well as
patients with severe kidney or liver disease should
avoid Goldenseal.

Yarrow: Yarrow has been used medicinally by many cultures for at least 2,000 years to reduce fevers and clear up congestive colds, flu and other respiratory infections.
Yarrow has a taste of BITTER, SALTY, AROMATIC and a temperature of COOL.
Yarrow contains flavonoids which likely account for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic properties.
Specific therapeutic uses include colds and flu, gastrointestinal discomfort, and cramps. Yarrow helps regulate the blood flow throughout the body, and coupled with its anti-inflammatory action, can relieve pain from arthritis and rheumatism. As a blood mover, it is also indicated for menstrual irregularities. Yarrow can also be used topically for slow healing wounds.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid Yarrow.
Peppermint Oil: Peppermint Oil has long been used for both its medicinal benefits and distinctive flavor.
Peppermint has a taste of AROMATIC, SPICY and a temperature of COOL.
Unlike other mints, Peppermint Oil contains the powerful therapeutic ingredient menthol. Peppermint Oil acts as a muscle relaxant, particularly in the digestive tract. It can also reduce the inflammation of nasal passages.
Specifically, Peppermint Oil is used to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ease nausea, control flatulence and diverticular disorders, improve digestion, reduce heartburn, fight bad breath, control muscle aches and chronic pain, clear congestion and cough related to colds and allergies, and help control mild asthma.
There are no notable cautions or known drug or nutrient interactions for Peppermint Oil.
